Greetings, my name is Ayesha Wilson and I am running for re-election to the Cambridge School Committee.

I am a first-born first-generation Jamaican-American woman. I was raised by a single-mother in the Jefferson Park public housing development in North Cambridge.

The City of Cambridge provided me with a unique source of education from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Some people cannot say that one district is responsible for their educational foundation, however and gratefully, I can. In the late 1980’s, my education in Cambridge consisted of wonderful black teachers. Teachers who talked often to my classmates and I about being successful, and the dedicated roadmap to achieving academic success. Now, as an adult, I reflect on this experience as a powerful one, which sets the tone for what I believe all students need to be academically engaged and successful regardless of their race, gender, religion or socioeconomic status.

As someone who wasn’t afforded the opportunity to go straight to college after high school, I worked in this great city. From the Mayor’s program to the youth centers I worked in this city for seven years before going to college to get my degrees in Human Services and in Social Work. I am the only school committee member who is a social worker, a union employee, and provides direct service to some of our most vulnerable learners through working as a Senior Teacher-Counselor for the Cambridge Housing Authority’s Work Force Program.

Through my experience, both personally and professionally I truly believe I am fully capable of earning your #1 vote on Nov. 2nd.

In my first-term:

  • I advocated for more social workers in both budget cycles helping to add nine new social workers to CPSD.
  • I co-wrote a policy to make racial equity a top priority for our district. This resolution drove investment in the Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.
  • I chaired the Special Education and Students Supports Subcommittee, working to meet the learning and COVID safety needs of every child.
  • I centered the voices of black and brown learners, families, and educators.

In this next term, I will:

  • Support student wellness with a robust mental health curriculum at every grade level.
  • Ensure there is a required internship opportunity for all high school seniors and juniors.
  • Co-design a 1-to-1 “champion for every child” mentoring and tutoring program, because as we know children do better when they know they have a trusting adult who is a champion in their corner. This initiative will help with the Individualized Success Plans for every child.
  • And work with colleagues on the City Council to implement Universal Pre-K, which we know will help with the various inequities to address the opportunity gap.

I am confident that I can win with your support! Please sign up to help me spread the word by knocking doors, hosting a meet and greet, or canvassing at events around Cambridge.

We must see each child as the “whole” student and meet them where they are. Together we can empower our schools and inspire our community. We need a champion for every child because Together We Are Better!

I hope to earn your #1 vote on November 2nd. You can reach me at Ayesha@voteayesha.com my website; voteayesha.com or on all social media platforms at voteayesha.

Sincerely,
Ayesha Wilson
