Cambridge has the heart, talent, and innovation to be a model city, but we are not there yet. As a proud East Cantabrigian and after having door knocked for more than 6 months (through rain, through snow), I have seen and heard firsthand that we are falling short on several basic needs (these are not all, but are the most common concerns pointed out by voters):
- Parents worry about used needles near playgrounds.
- Residents feel unsafe around Central Square at night.
- Families are concerned about school meal quality and road safety.
- We still face untreated sewage discharges in Alewife Brook.
- Middle class and low-income families struggle to find affordable housing.
We can do better, and we must. I am Dr. Peter Hsu and I am running for Cambridge City Council. I am a currently practicing physician, with an academic focus in public health and health policy. I would love to raise the standards of public health for both the most vulnerable populations in Cambridge as well as the rest of our City.
Let’s be clear! Public health is not just about eliminating used needles from Central Square, Porter Square, or various playgrounds here in Cambridge.
Let’s be clear! Public health is also not just about taking care of the uninsured and/or underinsured folks.
Let’s be clear! Public health means much more because it also encompasses affordable housing, safe bike lanes, green space, environmental sustainability, and fair economics.
Therefore, it should be clear that public health is your health, our health, and the health of our next generation.
And let me be clear! My stance on public health-related issues will be based on science and evidence, NOT ideologies. For affordable housing, I favor building big and tall along the main arteries of Cambridge, but in established neighborhoods, I am concerned about the health effects of the current upzoning bill. Hence, I am on the Repeal Slate because in established neighborhoods, I do not want to see a widening in wealth gap, an unnecessary reduction in green space, and solar energy inefficiency.
