New Candidate - 2023 My name is Peter Hsu. I am a physician by training and I do currently practice medicine, which always prompts the question why politics. Since we are all busy and you have lots of candidate pages to go though, I will try to make it brief. My clinical focus is in internal medicine and pediatric hematology/oncology (big words, whatever), but my research focus is actually in health policy, particularly looking at how Obamacare affects cancer patients. Now, Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act, in my opinion, is one of the best policies to be pushed forward in our generation. Yes, it needs modifications and tweaks, but it is definitely a very good first step. Back to why politics, well, rather than doing health policy at a research or academic level, I did some soul searching and eventually wanted to influence health policy on a different level or platform, so I thought about politics. Now, a person like me, having no background in politics, as well as being a first generation immigrant to this great country at the age of 12, at which time when I spoke no English, I believe starting at the local level is the best option for me, so here I am, trying my hardest to get your number one vote just like all of my fellow candidate colleagues! If elected, I would like to expand mental health outreach and access to high-quality health care to more people, especially kids, teens, youth, adolescents, young adults, older folks, and folks from lower socioeconomic class. Affordable housing, bike lanes, education equity, climate justice, and closing racial and wealth gap are all very important, and I promise to work on all those with all of you if elected, so elect me! I do carry a few degrees behind my name (MD, MPH, MS, whatever), but I don’t believe degrees are the real reasons you should vote for me. Reasons you should vote for me:
We might not agree on everything, but I promise to work with you. I understand life is not perfect, but together we can make it better and go farther. I still have a lot to learn, but if elected, I promise to work for Cambridge and Cambridge only. I personally think the logics and rationale behind taking care of a patient versus our City are not that much different, so again, I think it would be really cool to have a physician on our City Council, but if you don’t agree, elect me, and we can debate on!
