Akriti Bhambi is a new candidate this year. Akriti Bhambi announces candidacy for Cambridge School Committee A first-generation American and advocate for the Cambridge community, Bhambi received her master's in education policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education where she focused on strengthening language learning for non-native English speakers and maximizing investments in school funding. “I am running for School Committee to ensure that all of our students, no matter their background or ability, receive a high-quality education and are equipped with the tools to secure their future,” said Bhambi. “My parents came to the U.S. with the hope that they would find a new home in a country that invests in its people, in its communities, and in leveling the playing field. They taught me that education is the key to literacy, to self-advocacy, and to earning a living wage.” The Cambridge School Committee Candidate deepened her commitment to public policy and local advocacy while she served as chief of staff for state Rep. Marjorie Decker for four years, where she supported legislation and funding to support student mental health and nutrition, as well as policies to divert youth from the criminal justice system and into rehabilitative education programs. “I am thrilled that Akriti has decided to run for School Committee, especially during this crucial time for our community. Over the past year and a half, COVID-19 has changed education in Massachusetts and has put a heavy weight on teachers, parents, and students who are already facing the effects of the pandemic at home,” said Danna Mauch, long-time Cambridge resident and president and CEO of the MA Association of Mental Health. Bhambi currently serves as the director of public policy and government advocacy for the Massachusetts Health and Hospital Association where she develops and advocates on behalf of policies to increase access to health care statewide and to strengthen social services for children and families, from the development of workforce pipelines to investments in safe housing. “Akriti has been at the helm of local recovery efforts and understands the importance of a strong school system – demonstrated by her extensive history advocating for public education and our children’s mental health. As a longtime Cambridge resident and mental health professional, I believe that Akriti is best positioned to fight for those who depend on our Cambridge public schools because she has both the advocacy skills and the urgent awareness that our kids can’t wait,” said Mauch.
